Who we are
In August 1997, Health Plan Select (HPS) opened its doors as the area’s only local option in health insurance. The idea was to provide a health plan dedicated to improving the health and well being of the citizens of northeast Georgia. In the beginning, HPS offered a comprehensive network of physicians to businesses in Athens-Clarke and its five surrounding counties. Today, the HMO (health maintenance organization) offers a network of more than 1,000 physicians to businesses in 27 counties of northeast Georgia. Over 90% of licensed physicians in northeast Georgia are in our network.

Health Plan Select is affiliated with Athens Regional Medical Center, the regional referral center for northeast Georgia, and is licensed by the Georgia Department of Insurance (DOI). Health Plan Select has been consistently recognized by the DOI as having one of the lowest complaint ratios of any HMO in the state.

Health Plan Select, a not-for-profit HMO affiliated with Athens Regional Medical Center, has consistently ranked in the top 10% of all health plans nationally for plan quality, healthcare quality, personal physician quality and customer service. With access to more than 650 area physicians and the largest healthcare network in northeast Georgia, it’s no wonder more and more businesses are choosing Health Plan Select as their company’s health plan. In addition to offering a variety of HMO and POS (Point of Service) products, Health Plan Select offers third party administration services and self-funded products. The health plan also offers an expansive network of primary care physicians and specialists including cardiology, dermatology, pulmonology and many others. While most conditions can be treated right here at home, we also provide an extended network of specialty hospitals across the country to treat rare cases of cancer, leukemia and other such ailments. When members are out-of-town, they are still covered by the plan. HPS provides emergency coverage anywhere in the world.
